Climate change: challenges and opportunities

Tackling climate change represents an unprecedented social, economic and environmental challenge. However, climate policy also offers great opportunities.

Many of the effects of climate change are already evident. CO2 concentrations have exceeded levels recorded for tens of thousands of years; the global average temperature has risen by almost 1.2°C since pre-industrial times, sea levels are rising and large ice block are destabilising.

For more than four decades, climate scientists have been warning us of the importance of slowing climate change. Numerous studies warn that if we do not take action to reduce emissions and temperature rise in line with the commitments made under the Paris Agreement, the impacts in the future will be much more severe.

Dealing with climate change and its effects requires huge changes in our socio-economic systems. This is indeed an unprecedented challenge for mankind. However, these changes also represent opportunities and benefits that we often do not give enough importance to.
