Navigating the scientific journey: career and societal impact

He is director of Euskampus Fundazioa, founded in 2011 by the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU), Tecnalia Corporation and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC). He worked as assistant professor in the Faculty of Sciences of the UPV/EHU, international projects manager in Gamesa Energy, researcher and project manager at LABEIN- Tecnalia, project and outreach manager in the Nanoscience Cooperative Research Center- nanoGUNE, manager of the nanoBasque Strategy in the Basque Business Development Agency- SPRI, and director of DeustoTech. He holds a PhD in Physics from UPV/EHU, and a master degree in journalism and science communication from the Spanish Open University. He is the author of more than 70 international scientific publications indexed in the Web of knowledge,and author of 3 international patents. He has been awarded as one of the word-leading “Boundary Spanners” for University Business Cooperation by the University Industry Innovation Network.

She holds a PhD in Law and is a lecturer in Civil Law at the UPV/EHU. Her main line of research is bioethics, a subject on which she has published several monographs and scientific and dissemination articles. She has participated in 4 European research projects of the VI and VII European Framework Programme, as well as in multiple research projects of the National Programme. She has been a visiting professor at the Hastings Center for Bioethics in New York, the Center for Bioethics at the University of Philadelphia and the University of Bordeaux. She was Secretary General of Eusko Ikaskuntza, and later of Jakiunde, Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. Vice-rector of quality and teaching innovation at the UPV/EHU between 2008 and 2012, and responsible for the development of the educational model, as well as quality programmes, and training and evaluation of university teaching staff. Between 2013 and 2015, she was Deputy Minister of Universities and Research of the Basque Government.

Main lines of research and work experience: Evaluation, management and technical support of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional scientific collaboration networks from a focus on “science for and with society” and “governance in science”. Public policies and intervention projects in the areas of social innovation and entrepreneurial culture with emphasis on university-society knowledge networks.

After earning a Bachelor's degree in Natural Philosophy (Physics) from the University of Glasgow in 1965, Jocelyn Bell did her postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge, earning a PhD in 1969. She was a visiting professor at the University of Princeton, in the US, and is currently a guest lecturer in astrophysics at the University of Oxford and a fellow of Mansfield College. She served as President of the British Royal Astronomical Society from 2002 to 2004, as President of the Institute of Physics from 2008 to 2011 and as pro-Chancellor at Trinity College Dublin. She was also President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 2015 to 2017. Her many accolades include the Albert A. Michelson Medal of the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia in 1973, the Magellanic Premium of the American Philosophical Society in 2000 and the Royal Medal of the Royal Society in 2015. She has also received many honorary titles and is a Fellow of the Royal Society, as well as another five academic institutions. In 2007, she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2010, Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell was awarded the Royal Society Michael Faraday prize for excellence in communicating science.

After studying at the University of Bologna and a master's degree in astrophysics at the University of Toronto, she obtained her doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Munich. She then went on postdoctoral stays at the University of Zurich and Stanford University. Silvia arrived in Spain in 2013, first at the Cosmo Physics Study Center in Aragón, and, since 2018, at the DIPC. Her research focuses primarily on the study of supermassive black holes, from their formation to their impact on the galaxies where they live.

Ricardo Díez Muiño holds a PhD degree in physics by the UPV/EHU. He further developed his scientific career in the University of Bordeaux (France) and the LBNL (Berkeley, USA). He is currently Research Scientist at the Centro de Física de Materiales CFM (CSIC-UPV/EHU) and the Director of Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC). He served as Deputy Director of CFM between 2005 and 2011 and as Director of CFM from 2011 to 2015. His main fields of research are chemical physics and condensed matter theory, in particular molecular dynamics at surfaces, the theory of electronic excitations, and the theory of photoemission and photoelectron diffraction. He has published more than 100 scientific articles, as well as two books. Ricardo Díez Muiño has been the organizer of 4 international conferences and has been part of the organizing committee in 4 additional conferences. He is Vicepresident of Euskampus Campus of Excellence and Board Member of CIC nanoGUNE.

Jean-Marie Lehn studied chemistry at the University of Strasbourg, earning his PhD in 1963. He then spent a year in Robert Burns Woodward's laboratory at Harvard University, where he was part of the team working on the total synthesis of vitamin B12. In 1966 he became a lecturer at the University of Strasbourg and set up his own laboratory, where he focused his work on the physical chemistry of organic compounds, putting the experience gained in organic chemistry, quantum theory and physical methods into practice. In 1970 he was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg and from 1979 to 2010 he was Professor at the Collège de France in Paris. He is presently Professor at the University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS). Author of over 1000 scientific publications, Lehn is a member of many academies and scientific institutions and has won many international awards and prizes, including the Humboldt Prize (1983), the Royal Society's Davy Medal (1997) and the ISA Medal for Science (2006). He received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2009 and was named Grand Officer of the French Legion of Honour in 2014, among other accolades.
