Description

The University of the Basque Country, a leader in the Basque university system, is offering you the chance to take part in the engaging course "Basque Culture International Summer School". This course, taught by internationally prestigious instructors, offers a unique academic opportunity which will allow you to get to know Basque society first-hand while you study its language and its customs. The objectives of the course are:

  • to reflect on Basque culture and identity and its particularities (whether historical, symbolic, and so forth);
  • to become familiar with the latest academic research regarding the different fields that comprise it, such as language and literature, anthropology, history, economics, etc.;
  • to acquire a working knowledge of the Basque language that will allow you to communicate in everyday activities;
  • to learn about Basque culture and geography, through short trips to the surroundings and fun activities.

Directors

Marta Kopinska

UPV/EHU

Marta Kopinska is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and German Studies and Translation and Interpreting at the UPV/EHU. She holds a BA in Ethnolinguistics from Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan (AMU, Poland) and an MA and PhD in Language Acquisition in Multilingual Settings (LAMS) from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She is a member of the Language and Speech research group (LASLAB, UPV/EHU) and is currently involved in various research projects dealing with individual differences and the acquisition of English as foreign language. Her research interests include sociolinguistics, EFL and second/third language acquisition, language attitudes and motivation, individual differences in SLA, multilingual education and CLIL, and English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) in tertiary education. She is also a great enthusiast of the Basque language (Euskera).

Oscar Alvarez Gila

UPV/EHU, Associate Professor

He is a lecturer in History of America in the Department of Philology and History of the Faculty of Arts (Vitoria Gasteiz), Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea / University of the Basque Country. One of his main lines of research is the history of the Basque diaspora. He has been visiting professor at several foreign universities, among others, Basque Visiting Fellow at Oxford University, 2008-2009, William Douglass Distinguished Scholar at the Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada-Reno, 2010-2011, Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Eminent Scholar Chair in Latin American Studies at Columbus State University, 2013-2014 and Magnus Mörner Memorial Professorship in Latin American Studies at Stockholms Universitet (2016-2017). He is director of the postgraduate programme in Basque Diaspora at the UPV/EHU.

Oier Araolaza Arrieta

Oier Araolaza Arrieta (Elgoibar, 1972) is a dancer (traditional Basque dancer). He is dancing in the groups Kezka from Eibar and Argia from Donostia. Under the direction of Juan A. Urbeltz he has performed in Argia group shows such as Alakiketan (1991), Kondharian (1997), Axuri Beltza (2008) and Martin Zalakain (2017). He is the founder and editor of the Basque dance portal Dantzan.eus. Degree in Information Sciences (EHU, 1995) and Social and Cultural Anthropology (EHU, 2000), Master in Musicology (EHU, 2008), Certificate of Advanced Studies in Art History (EHU, 2010) and Doctoral Thesis in Social Communication (EHU, 2020) investigating Basque dance and gender in the Mikel Laboa chair. He has been a professor of Basque dance at Dantzerti, the Superior Center of the Basque Country for Dramatic Art and Dance and at the title of Basque Dance at the UPV/EHU (2016-2017). He has written articles on Basque dance in Argia, Berria y Dantzan, and published the books: Gregorio Santa Cruz dantza-maisua (Ego-Ibarra, 1998), Euskal Dantza (Etxepare, 2012) and Genero-identitatea euskal dantza tradizionalaren eraikuntzan (UEU, 2020). From 2012 to 2023 he has been a member of the Basque Council of Culture of the Basque Government.

Fernando Cossio Mora

UPV/EHU-Ikerbasque, Catedrático de Química Orgánica

Degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of Zaragoza (1982). Doctor in Chemical Sciences from the UPV/EHU (1986). Professor of Organic Chemistry at the UPV/EHU. He has been Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry / Kimika Fakultatea (1999-2001) and Vice-rector for Research and International Relations at the UPV/EHU (2001-2003). Since 2009 he has been the Scientific Director of Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for the advancement of science. Author of 230 international publications, 11 international invention patents and 5 books). Most relevant awards and distinctions: Almirall Award from the Spanish Society of Therapeutic Chemistry (1987), Euskoiker Award (2005), Ignacio Rivas Medal from the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (2011), Janssen-Cilag Spain Research Award from the Royal Society Spanish of Chemistry (2013). Corresponding academic of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical-Chemical and Natural Sciences of Zaragoza (2016). Awarded with a Synergy grant from the European Research Council (ERC) in 2020 and Euskadi Research Award 2020

Nerea Eizagirre Telleria

EHU

(Zumaia, 1992). She obtained her BA degree in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at the University of Barcelona (UB). She is a dual Ph.D. student in Basque Studies and literature at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

Maite Garcia Ruiz

She is a professor at the Begoñako Andra Mari Teacher Training University College (BAM). She has a diploma (UPV / EHU) and a degree (UCJC) in Elementary Education (with expertise in Foreign Language). She completed her master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language at the University of Idaho (UofI) in 2015 and has a doctorate in Linguistics and Basque Literature (UPV/EHU) (2023). She collaborates in the UPV/EHU UNESCO Chair of World Linguistic Heritage and in the ELEBILAB research group. She is also actively involved in the Equiling and AMRELSE research projects.

Iñaki Goirizelaia Ordorika

UPV/EHU, Ingeniería de Comunicaciones

Full professor of Telematics Engineering at the University of the Basque Country(UPV/EHU). He was president of UPV/EHU from 2009 to 2017, Vice-rector for University Enterprise Relations from 1998 to 2000, Vice-rector of the Academic Organization area in 2004 and Vice-rector of the Bizkaia Campus from 2005-2008. He was a Visiting Fellow at Stanford Research Institute in California in 1984 and 1985 and later he spent six months in 2004 as a visiting professor at the MediaLab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2017, he held the Eloise Garmendia Bieter Chair at Boise State University. In his research career, he has worked in three specific areas of focus: AI, artificial vision and security in telecommunications networks. He has authored the textbook "Fundamentals of Programming"(1999), and was co-author of the book "Dancing through networks using Java"(2021). In addition, he is the creator and screenwriter of the documentary “Bai, bagara!” which focuses on Basque values in the diaspora, and he also created the documentary on dance “Lur hau gurea”. He is currently president and co-founder of the PuntuEus foundation and is an honorary member of Jakiunde, the Basque Academy of Science, Art and Letters

Olatz González Abrisketa

I am a professor at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and president of the Basque Association of Anthropology, Ankulegi. My main research topics have been sport, sexual solidarities and animal worlds. Regarding the first of them, I am the author of Raquetistas. Gloria, represión y olvido de las pelotaris profesionales (San Soleil, 2022), and Pelota Vasca: un ritual, una estética (Muelle de Uribitarte, 2005), published in English in 2012 as Basque Pelota: a ritual, an aesthetic (CSB, UNR). I have also directed, together with the Danish filmmaker Jørgen Leth, Pelota II (2015) and I have made the scientific direction of the exhibition Jokoak. Matter and challenge, held at the Museum of San Telmo in 2016.

Ainhoa Urzelai Vicente

Mondragon Unibertsitatea (HUHEZI) eta UPV/EHU, Doctorando

Ainhoa Urzelai Vicente (Arrasate, 1995) has a PhD in Basque Linguistics and Philology (UPV/EHU, 2024) and her thesis analyses the representation of armed conflicts in children’s and youth literature written in Basque. She completed his degree in Basque Studies (2017) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and she holds a Master’s Degree in Basque Linguistics and Philology (UPV/EHU). He also completed a Master’s Degree in Compulsory Secondary Education, Upper Secondary Education, Vocational Training and Language Teaching at Mondragon Unibertsitatea (MU), and she obtained the Expert Degree in Transmission of the Basque Culture at Mondragon Unibertsitatea. She has done research stays at the Universität Konstanz in Germany, at the Universitat de València (UV) and at the IKER UMR 5478-CNRS research center in Baiona. She is part of the consolidated research group Historical Memory in the Iberian Literatures (MHLI). She has taught at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), University of Deusto and Mondragon Unibertsitatea (where she works nowadays).
