Miradas críticas sobre los festivales de cine: historia, cultura y política

Head of the Department of Research at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE) and principal investigator of the research project “Zinemaldia 70: All Possible Histories”. He holds a PhD from New York University (NYU), where he has also taught. His academic work has been published in international journals such as Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies or Sociologias and in volumes such as 1968 and Global Cinema (Wayne State University Press, 2018). In 2016 he directed an artistic research project about the militant film archives entitled Europa, futuro anterior, co-sponsored by Tabakalera and Donostia-San Sebastian European Capital of Culture Foundation.

Comenzó su carrera como crítico y periodista escribiendo para publicaciones online en España e Italia, y ha colaborado regularmente con revistas como Caimán - Cuadernos de Cine (antes Cahiers du Cinéma - España) o Rockdelux. Es miembro de la Federación Internacional de la Crítica Cinematográfica (FIPRESCI) y ha sido jurado en festivales internacionales como BAFICI, Edinburgh, Vila do Conde, Toulouse, o Crossing Europe Linz. Trabajó como programador en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón en 2010 y 2011, y fue jefe de programación del Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla entre 2012 y 2016. Ha colaborado en diversos libros sobre cine y en 2015 publicó el poemario 'Olvidos vergonzosos' (ed. Maclein y Parker). En 2016 escribió y dirigió el cortometraje Ihesa, seleccionado en Kimuak y proyectado en San Sebastián, Málaga, ZineBi, Uruguay o BAFICI, entre muchos otros certámenes. Fue elegido Director del FICX en abril de 2017 como resultado de un concurso público.

Directora de ZINEBI-Festival Internacional de Cine Documental y Cortometraje de Bilbao. Doctora y profesora en Comunicación Audiovisual por la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU), es profesora invitada en el Máster de Teoría y Práctica del Documental Creativo de la UAB de Barcelona, donde ejerce como tutora en el desarrollo y producción de los proyectos documentales. Ha realizado estancias de investigación en la Escuela de Cine (FUC) y en la Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF) de Buenos Aires y ha sido profesora invitada en la EITCV- Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV de San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba). Su línea de investigación, libros y demás publicaciones se centra principalmente en el cine documental contemporáneo. Además, ha tomado parte en numerosas comisiones de valoración de desarrollo y producción de proyectos cinematográficos y en paneles de expertos en Foros, LABs y sesiones de Pitching de diversos festivales internacionales.

Kazetaritzan lizentziatu zen Nafarroako Unibertsitatean, Euskal Arte Garaikideko graduondoa egin zuen Deustuko Unibertsitatean, eta Zinema Dokumental Sortzaileari buruzko masterra Bartzelonako Pompeu Fabra Unibertsitatean. Gaur egun ikus-entzunezko programen arduraduna da Donostiako Tabakalera Nazioarteko Kultur Zentroan, eta Zinema Ikasleen Nazioarteko Topaketaren koordinazio-taldeko kide, 2013tik. Prior to becoming a Senior Advisor and Selection Committee Member of the Berlinale, Paz Lázaro both directed and curated the Official Programme section, Panorama. As a delegate for Spain and Latin America, she has been screening and evaluating film submissions for Spanish-language narrative features and documentaries, from 2006 until today. She joined the selection committee for the Competition in Berlinale in 2007, and has also been part of the selection committee for “Berlinale Series”, since it was founded. Before her career as a curator, content acquisition specialist and programmer, she worked in film and theatre production, mainly in Spain. As a script and editing consultant, she has collaborated with the ICAA in Spain, ICAU in Uruguay and FOPROCINE in Mexico for IMCINE, Torino Film Lab, the Match Factory, as well as Ibermedia, among others.

A former student of the ENS Ulm, Caroline Moine has been an assistant professor in contemporary history at the Université Paris-Saclay/Université Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines since 2006, and a full member of the Centre d'histoire culturelle des sociétés contemporaines, which she co-directed from 2014 to 2018. She is a member of the editorial board of the journal Le Temps des Médias. Une revue d'histoire and co-founder of the new Franco-German review Symposium Culture@Kultur. She has co-organized film screenings in France (around DEFA films at the ENS, the Cinémathèque française and the Maison Heinrich-Heine) and in Germany (Institut français de Berlin). She is a member of the jury for the documentary film project prize of the Rendez-vous de l'histoire de Blois.

Holds a Degree in Journalism obtained at the University of Navarre. She has worked for more than ten years in the media, including El Mundo, Deia, Diario de Noticias de Álava and Noticias de Gipuzkoa, where, as head of the Culture section, she was responsible during seven years for reporting on the Festival. She has also worked in the Festival daily editorial department. Until joining our team, she had been assistant manager of its cultural programme with the San Sebastian, European Capital of Culture 2016 Foundation. She wrote the script for the play on the 50th anniversary of the Lagun bookshop and has participated in the short film selection Kimuak, the Basque government programme for the international promotion and distribution of Basque short films (2018).

Member of the European Film Academy (EFA) and Honorary member of the Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences of Argentina. In 2015 the Council of Ministers on Spain bestowed him the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts. Holds a degree in Special Pedagogy. Director of the Donostia Kultura Film Unit for 22 years. Director for 21 years of the Horror and Fantasy Film Festival and director for 8 years of the Human Rights Film Festival, both in San Sebastian. He has directed the Nosferatu collection for 22 years. He is the co-author of several books on Basque filmmakers including Elías Querejeta, Montxo Armendáriz, Antxon Eceiza, Julio Medem and Javier Aguirresarobe, among others, and on Asian cinema (Shinya Tsukamoto, poeta y guerrillero del cinematógrafo). He has also written on a variety of subjects (El dolor, los nervios culturales del sufrimiento – Breve historia del cortometraje vasco). Doctor in History of Cinema (Autonomous University of Madrid) and associate professor at University of the Basque Country, where she teaches documentary film theory and practice. Her expertise relates to creative documentary and film festivals, having worked in these fields as a critic, scriptwriter, selection committee member, researcher and lecturer. She has co-edited Film Festivals and Anthropology (Cambridge SP) eta Documentary Film Festivals Vol.1 and Vol.2 (Palgrave MacMillan). She holds an MA on theory and practice of documentary film by Autonomous University of Barcelona and has BAs in Audiovisual Communication and Socio-cultural Anthropology. Profesora de Teoría y análisis del Film y la Televisión de la Universidad Rovira y Virgili (URV) y profesora del Máster de Documental creativo de la UAB, del Posgrado de la Diplomatura de Paz y del Master de Género y Comunicación de la misma Universidad. Ha impartido clases en la Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) y en la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). Codirectora de la Mostra Internacional de Films de Dones desde 1993/2003 y desde el 2011 hasta hoy. Forma parte de la cooperativa Drac Màgic desde 1979. Colabora en medios de comunicación como TV3 y Radio-4 como analista política y es responsable junto con Anna Solà de la sección Pensar el cine de la revista Cuadernos de Pedagogía. Ha publicado diversos estudios sobre las relaciones entre pedagogía, cultura y cine, sobre análisis fílmico y de los medios de comunicación así como de televisión y publicidad. Entre 2003 y 2010 ocupó el cargo de Presidenta del Institut Català de les Dones del Govern de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Charlotte Serrand is the director of the International Film Festival of La Roche-sur-Yon and program advisor at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2017 she directed her first feature film, 1048 lunes, that has been selected in different international film festivals.
