Summer Course on the SALTILLO training ship from 2 to 5 July

A free summer course on researching, resources and the health of the marine environment will be held in parallel on 3 and 4 July.

Students from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and from Bordeaux University will be on the two-day sea crossing on the Saltillo training ship to conduct a cross-border study on the health of the environment.

The aim of this summer course is to showcase the dissemination, training and scientific work at the universities and in important research and innovation projects for the social and economic environment of the cross-border coast; which is the reason for its being part of the III Cross-Border Summer Courses.

In this III edition, the student crew under the ship's skipper Mikel Lejarza will complete the crossing between the UPV/EHU Santurtzi Higher Technical School of Nautical and Marine Engineering and the Plentzia Marine Station (PiE-UPV/EHU), and back.  Students from the UPV/EHU Degree in Nautical Science (9 participants), the UPV/EHU Degree in Educational Innovation (8 participants) and from some degrees of Bordeaux University (5 participants) will be on the ship.

Along with learning sailing skills, the students will undertake a robust programme consisting of lecturers, presentations of end-of-degree projects and master's theses, panels and presentations of research work.

Different researchers and experts will be taking part in this summer course run by Imanol Basterretxea from the UPV/EHU and Patrice González from Bordeaux University.

It should be noted that this Cross-Border Summer Course is based on the UPV/EHU's IKDi3 educational model.  This model – whose aim is to train to citizens committed to sustainability – firmly advocates training based on knowledge, skills and values.  Furthermore, it envisages the training of a multilingual, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary team to reflect the community that is the lifeblood of the alliance between the universities.
